What year was this shot?
-
Museum of Hartlepool said:
Sorry Harrison we do not know the specific date although the fashions suggest 1880s-1890s.

Museum of Hartlepool said:
It is likely that these photographs were taken between 1887 and 1890, as we have recently discovered that this was virtually the only time when Pattison was active and living in Hartlepool

The photo has a very relaxed feel to it, despite the restrictive "beach wear".Glad the tide was out when this was taken. A mad scramble for the shore might have been tricky.

Adoree Villany first came to notoriety for her "Dance of the Seven Veils" in 1905; she was tried for obscenity in Munich in 1911-12, for her dancing "without clothing." She also published a book, _Tanz-Reform und Pseudo-Moral_, setting forth her philosophy of modern dance.

Good thing she was acquitted!

What is she doing with her hands, needlework? Also, is this shot supposed to be suggestive of the style of a century earlier, Napoleon I era?

For a short bio from Weimar and Now: German Cultural Criticism, by MR Karl Toepfer, see books.google.com/books?id=FgvYUZh75WwC&lpg=PA22&o... or by the same author, in Empire of Ecstasy publishing.cdlib.org/ucpressebooks/view?docId=ft167nb0sp&... This piece suggests that she also based dances on paintings. This makes me wonder if this could be one of those. It looks to me as though the costume is not actually a dress, but designed to unwind.
