trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/63616320# - this pic appeared in the Illustrated Sydney News on 14th March, 1891...but I suspect the pic might have been taken a few years earlier...if you zoom in, over at Circular Quay there looks to be scaffolding around the Customs House...so the James Barnet rebuild (completed ?1887) might still be in progress. The Mort & Co wool store extension looks complete...the extension was built in 1884-86...I can't see the 1886 extension to the Harrison Jones & Devlin wool store (in Loftus St, opposite Customs House)...but that might be because it's obscured...

I hoped this was the same gun as in a Phillips Collection (PhM) photo, but it isn't.

I doubt that this gun was at Middle Head, as the Middle Head guns are quie well docume ted. More likely to be at South Head. See www.panoramio.com/photo_explorer#view=photo&position=... note that the way the gun is now mounted at South Head the carriage is back to front.

Other possibility: this gun is a 9in 12 ton RML at Georges Heights (Not 'Middle Head')
