MIght have been taken of someone's aviary birds, used to their owner's presence - they look rather calm to have a camera staring at them. Aviaries being very popular in the Victorian era.

He won the doubles title at the Australasian Championships, the future Australian Open, alongside Fred Alexander in 1908.
