    The McKenna shop front at the right of this picture is a classic example of the work of local plasterer and builder Pat McAuliffe (1846–1921). McKennas started in the hardware business at 3 Market Street in 1871; In 1962, the McKenna business expanded into what in 1911 had been Gibson's drapery business at 1 Market Street, presumably just out of shot here. See this modern photograph of the expanded premises. See also McKenna's history and 1911 census and works of Pat McAuliffe.

    In the late 19th century, it wasn't wise to go to Listowel market if you had any enemies. . Jan 1882:
    A farmer named Long, residing near Ballybunson, whilst returning on Saturday night from Listowel butter market, was attacked by four disguised men and left in a state of nudity on the public road. At a later hour a land steward named Slack was subjected to similar treatment, and evidently by the same band.
    Feb 1888:
    Yesterday morning a farmer named James Fitzmaurice, who has been for some two years boycotted, was proceeding with his daughter to Listowel market, when he was met on the road by two men, who shot him with revolvers, . He died very shortly afterwards. An inquest was held yesterday, and a verdict of wilful murder returned. Two men have been arrested on suspicion.
    Sep 1888:
    A number of men fired six shots at a butter merchant named Jeremiah Schannell, who was on his way to Listowel market this morning. The outrage took place at Meens, halfway between Abbeyfeale and Castleisland. He drove rapidly away, however, and escaped uninjured. No arrests have been made
    In other Listowel market news, in November 1895, two farmers, William Egan and James Begae, were fined for "exposing for sale in the Listowel butter market two firkins of butter adulterated with water beyond the standard." Egan was fined 10s and Begane 5s. And in 1876, Mr John Nolan of Tralee bought 600 firkins of butter at an average of £4 per firkin. "The purchase involved an outlay of some £2,500, and is perhaps the largest mercantile transaction of the sort ever recorded in Ireland"

    The first thing to come to mind was that it must have been a nighmare to dust! Fantastic room, full of memories and mementoe's. the portrait of the two gentlemen in military uniform looks interesting.
