"Near Spring Street"? It's taken from Bridge Street; Spring Street is almost out of sight …

The version of the slide at the PHM shows the buildings further South in Pitt St...including the tower on the Pitt St facade of the Imperial Arcade...which from a distance looks like a clock tower without the clock. This tower was demolished in the earlier 20th century...but I haven't yet managed to establish a date... trove.nla.gov.au/work/244641928 - this City of Sydney Archives pic of Her Majesty's Theatre shows the Pitt St facade of the Imperial Arcade with the tower... Also see this (? later) pic which shows the AMP building nearing completion and a building site where the New Zealand Insurance Building was to appear...it shows the later style street light... www.flickr.com/photos/anmm_thecommons/8615355732/ trove.nla.gov.au/work/190055464 - this NLA Fairfax pic...taken from further to the South...shows how things looked in ca. 1916...with the newly completed Commonweath Bank Building (opposite the GPO) dominating the skyline further along Pitt St...the Commonwealth Bank Building was evidently built in the period 1913-16...

The Commissariat Store was built in c.1810, demolished in 1939. This is the north and east facades of the original U-shaped building (1810) which fronted on to Circular Quay so ships could unload directly into the warehouse. The rectangular 1812 building was behind fronting George Street. @ State Records NSW - this seems to be a fairly rare picture of a very important and historic building just before it was unfortunately demolished. There are a few on Picture Australia (including a Casneaux), but most of the Tyrrell Collection's many views of Circular Quay have a forest of ships' masts and funnels obscuring the building.

Yes it is a terrible shame that this wonderful building didn't survive the re-modelling of The Rocks. The demolition of such an historically significant building would never happen today.

Strictly speaking, I think it's Pitt Street, looking north, at the intersection of Eddy Ave (right) and Rawson Place (left).
