69. Mildura Bridge from NSW, 1948

    This is not at Mildura. (no railway crossed the river at Mildura). It is the Paringa Bridge, carrying the Sturt Higway, just east of Renmark, S.A. The South Australian Railways had a branch line from Tailem Bend, that crossed the Murray at Paringa and terminated at Barmera. The bridge still exists and the lifting span still works. The bridge was opened in 1927 and the railway part was closed in 1984 and converted to a footpath.

    I think the circa date is about 25 years out? Going by the type of vehicles seen in the street - and the age of the shopfronts - this photo looks more like it was taken circa 1920s? There is another image dated 1938 (same view point) which shows the vegetation near the bridge grown up into tall trees - digital.sl.nsw.gov.au/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps...
