Could this be outside their house, "one of the most expensive houses in New York on Fifth Avenue in 1905, a low, broad Renaissance design of marble with a wide garden and driveway." The house is described as "long gone" in query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A00E5D7163BF930A... Here is some information about the house, including a picture of 1063 Fifth Avenue before it was demolished in 1930. I see no sign of the staircase seen in this picture.

That would be Mrs. Lawrence Cowle Phipps, wife of a US Senator from Colorado, and a steel company executive: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_C._Phipps bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=p000317 I'm guessing it's the third Mrs. Lawrence Phipps--the former Miss Margaret Rogers, daughter of former Denver Mayor Platt Rogers. They wed in January 1911. If that's Margaret Rogers Phipps (1888-1968), there's a later photo of her here: www.du.edu/phipps/history.html She was inducted into the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000; she won the Colorado State Open women's doubles championship three times. It might also be the second Mrs. Phipps, the former Genevieve Chandler (b 1879), whose name also appeared frequently in the society pages; but that marriage was annulled in 1904.

pennylrichardsca: thanks for providing us additional information about Mrs. Phipps. I think it might be Margaret Rogers after looking at her earlier and later pictures. We will probably investigate further before making any changes to the record.

Name J.C Phipps in photo John Schaffer Phipps possible. Did he own a hotel in Yreka, CA 1896? What of J. C. Phipps restaurant owner in Paxico, KS. Did JC move to CA and build the hotel?
