  Hij viel inderdaad negen jaar eerder, op 18 juli 1951, in het ravijn (tijdens de afdaling op de Col d’Aubisque), -één dag nadat hij met een etappezege in de Pyreneeën de gele trui veroverde. Op de beeldbank van Spaarnestad Photo staat een foto waarop te zien is dat hij, nauwelijks gewond, met aan elkaar geknoopte fietsbanden omhoog werd gehesen: www.spaarnestadphoto.nl/index.php?option=com_memorix&...
