Representatives of the UQ Senate, staff and students gathered at short notice in March 1954 to catch a glimpse of Prince Philip, as the Duke of Edinburgh made a whirlwind tour of the St Lucia campus. The informal UQ visit was a late addition to the 1954 royal tour of Australia, during which Prince Philip joined Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, on her first tour of Australia as British monarch. Prince Philip arrived at UQ shortly after 6 pm on 17 March and spent about one-and-a-half hours at the University, where he was received by Queensland Deputy Premier John Duggan, Chancellor Dr. Otto Hirschfeld, and Vice-Chancellor John Story AO. The Duke was then escorted to the John Darnell Art Gallery, where he was presented with a souvenir of bound photographs of UQ buildings, before moving to the library, where he met and greeted about 50 student union representatives. The triumphant 1954 tour was to be the first of a total of eight visits she would make to Queensland. On the first visit, Queen Elizabeth was accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, and spent seven days in Queensland. Public holidays were declared and people turned out in their thousands to see the Royal couple. From childhood, The Queen was held in great affection by Queenslanders and was respected and admired throughout her long and successful reign for the impeccable, gracious and dignified service she gave. Gregory Cope Exactly! All of the other shots of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh meeting people on this tour show everyone quite formally dressed. The State Library holds in its collection an itinerary of the tour which may give us somc clues.

Philip renounced his Danish and Greek royal titles ahead of his marriage to Elizabeth, and there was another step he had to take before their wedding: becoming a member of the Church of England. The New York Times reported that Philip had been baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church, and the Archbishop of Canterbury fully received Philip, who regarded himself as an Anglican for years, into the Church of England on Oct. 3, 1947. When King George VI died on Feb. 6, 1952, Princess Elizabeth, then 25, became Queen Elizabeth II. At the time of King George VI's death, Elizabeth and Philip were on a safari trip in Kenya. Philip's title did not change, as he was not named King Consort, but he left his military career to support Elizabeth. The new Queen, Philip and their children moved from Clarence House to Buckingham Palace. Prince William later said of Philip leaving his navy days behind him, "One of the things I do really admire him for is the fact that he gave up a very, very successful military career to be the Queen's consort and support her and go into service and duty in a different way. It was very much a man's world back then. So for a man to give up his career to support a woman, albeit the Queen, was still quite a big step."
