Home made telescope

  • Vesna Verencevic said:
The invention of the telescope Historians are not absolutely sure who invented the telescope, but it is known that in 1608 a Dutch spectacle maker, Hans Lipperhey, announced a new lens-based seeing instrument that made distant objects appear much closer. This is the first evidence we have of the invention of the telescope, the first scientific instrument to extend one of the human senses. Source: www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/history-telescope

Making a tackle in a game of Rugby, Brisbane

The black Jersey with the silver fern emblem are of the All Blacks New Zealand rugby union team. The site saintsandheathens.wordpress.com/wallabies-rugby-jerseys/w... says that the Australian rugby union team (Wallabies) jersey for 1938 was 'gold with a green centre band' for a match against New Zealand. It does not list this jersey colours used for any other year. Matches between Australia and New Zealand were played in 1938 as follows 13 August 1938Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney 6 August 1938Exhibition Ground, Brisbane 23 July 1938Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney This photo is likely to be of one of these matches. The Houses in the background look to be typical of Queensland architecture of the time - elevated timber buildings. I therefore suggest that this is a photo of Australia v New Zealand dated 6th August 1938 at the exhibition grounds Brisbane.

Fantastic detective work Peter McCombe ! Thanks for sharing this info. We would have to agree with you on all accounts. It's likely the game is in Brisbane as George Jackman was a photographer for the Brisbane newspapers The Courier Mail and The Daily Mail from 1920 -1945.

Learning to Play Hockey - Northbrook

The man in this photo is Ted Courneya. He and his brother Vern owned the Northbrook Hotel from 1946-1951 when they sold to Joe and Madeline Bolton.
Ted had two sons so these boys are likely Courneya boys.
