My first thought that the Krazy Kataloger had got his initials and abbreviations mixed up, and that Mr Fogarty was a Justice of the Peace. My apologies to the KK for being suspicious, but there was in fact a Mr John P Fogarty JP who was chairman of Castlecomer Board of Guardians (Kilkenny Moderator - Saturday 03 June 1916)

Irish Independent - Wednesday 18 November 1942:

MR. JOHN P. FOGARTY Mr. John P. Fogarty, Leinster Rd., Dublin, who died, was a member of a well-known Castlecomer family. Over 20 years ago he was prominent in public life, having been a former member of Kilkenny Co. Council and other local bodies. He was one of the National Directors of the old United Irish League and a close friend of the leaders and members of the Irish Parliamentary Party.

DISASTROUS FIRE IN CASTLECOMER. PREMISES GUTTED. • At an early on Friday morning last a serious outbreak of fire occurred in the business establishment and residence of Mr. John P. Fogarty, .J.P.. M.C.C., Castlecomer. The signal of the outbreak having been given, the police and inhabitants of the town rushed to the scene of the conflagration, but the fire had got such a hold on the building, despite the united efforts of police and civilians, that the whole premises, including the 'entire stock-in-trade both in the drapery, grocery, and wine departments, as well as the furniture in the living rooms, were completely destroyed by the flames; fortunately no lives were lost. At great peril to himself Mr. Fogarty succeeded in rescuing Mrs. Fogarty and their little child from the burning building. The only means of escape was by the front first-floor window, as the ground floor was completely enveloped in flames, but with the assistance of a willing band of workers Mrs. Fogarty and her little one were safely rescued and were followed by Mr. Fogarty. [...] Nothing now remains of the once splendid premises but a heap of desolate ruins, and universal sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Fogarty in their great misfortune.

Wonder if he is related to Honourable Minister, Bill Shorten, Leader of the Opposition, in in the land of Oz.
