City Hall, N.Y. on fire (LOC)

  • Richard Norton said:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Hall City Hall Cupola Ruined By Fire. Building Deluged by Water, but Historic Works of Art Are Saved. Records Removed Safely. Fire Starts from Charcoal Pot Left on the Tower Roof by Workmen. Roofers repairing the cupola on the City Hall left off work at the noon hour yesterday and neglected to put out a fire in a charcoal pot. In some manner, yet to be explained, this fire ignited some loose charcoal in one of the gutters of the roof and in a few minutes the old wooden cupola was in flames. According to that report, this is the casket being lifted onto a caisson from West Point in front of City Hall, starting a journey to St. Patrick's Cathedral and Woodlawn Cemetery. Theodore Roosevelt (who would die about 7 months later) is visible with the honorary pallbearers at center.
