    It is interesiting to see that the lances are leaning against the scenic background, so is this taken in a studio or has a backdrop been set-up outside?

    Pretty sure that's not a back-drop. Those are flag poles and the flags are flapping in the wind. With the long exposure they slightly disappear, and that darker flag looks like a shadow when it's not.

    It would be interesting to know what the George Eastman House staff think. Even in an enlargement the flagpole appears to be leaning against the horizon line. Many photographers of the era did set-ups, Curtis was well known for it. Doesn't mean it is a fake.

    I don't think it is a fake. What you are mistaking as a shadow is actually a ghosting of the flag from movement in the wind during the long exposure required.
