The Irish Industries Lace Depot in Dublin`s Grafton Street was one of the most important retailing outlets for Irish lace while Arnott and Co was another. Harrod’s in London commissioned lace gowns which were displayed in their shop windows. The Princess of Wales wore a Youghal shawl when she married the future king Edward VII and, in 1873, Queen Victoria invited Youghal lace makers to Buckingham Palace to demonstrate their art. Queen Mary`s wedding dress train was made of Youghal and contained 5,250,000 stitches made from nearly 12 miles of thread.

The Irish Lace Depot, whose interior is illustrated here, was purchased by Lady Aberdeen from the family of the lace dealer, Ben Lindsay, on his death. Apart from its sales, it provided another important service, because it supplied designs and materials. I wonder what all the fuss is about now so? It looks more like a lady with a parasol though on closer examination but as you said it just MIGHT be a priest who has glammed up a bit;-)

There was a Mary Nolan living in Arundel Square, Waterford, who was aged 48 in 1911, and would have been 75 in 1938...

This might or might not be the right Nolan, but the Waterford Standard of Saturday 29 January 1949 has the obituary of Mr R.B. ("Bennie") Nolan of Annaville, aged 60. He had carried on the building and contracting business started by his father and was one of the largest employers in the building trade. Perhaps he commissioned the photo on behalf of an inventive employee?
