The letters "PLM" on the side of the vehicle stands for "Paris Lyon Mediterranee" . This was the scenic route over the Alpes which ended at Nice - which can be seen across the radiator of the second vehicle. PLM was also known as the "Route des Alpes" which can be seen written along the side of the first vehicle.
