When the 71st marched out of their armory at 34th and Lexington on June 27, 1916, bound for the Mexican border, they marched west to 5th Avenue with 45 pounds of equipment each, then uptown to 58th Street and west to 11th Avenue, and north to the New York Central rail yards at 60th St. (11th Ave. became West End Ave. at 59th Street). There, they boarded 46 wooden passenger cars for the 5 day trip. They arrived at the yards at 11:35 a.m. According to The Sun's account: "The train were all standing ready, the cars open and inviting looking, but the men had a roasting of fifty minutes in the sun before things were ready for them." This and the linked photo were taken on West End Avenue, looking North. Isn't the exact date actually on the photograph? It looks like it was 6/28/16

That's the date recorded on the negative, indicating it wasn't taken before that date. It can be a later date, such as when it went into the lab or was cataloged. And sometimes there are multiple dates, years apart.
