    Wow -- one stop shopping. The precursor to Wal-Mart! Notice that's really a gas pump. You crank that long handle to put whatever amount of gas you want in the tank up top, then drain it into your car with the hose.

    Yes, there's a glass container or cistern atop which probably had calibrations on it so that you could count the precise volume pumped.

    Farmer cooperatives existed in 1940, with some sort of guidance/assistance from the Farm Security Admnistration (FSA)? Interesting - I don't think the FSA exists anymore; I wonder what became of it.
