I love old photographs of El Paso. El Paso has such a rich history and I am also facinated by the geology of the El Paso area. Thank you for posting this on Flickr.

Esta fotografía fue tomada del lado mexicano, en Ciudad Juárez, no en el Paso. Se alcanza a ver la vía del tren y un vagón; estas se encuentran al sur del Río Bravo. En la esquina inferior derecha se ve el número 2195-1 en imagen de espejo y "de cabeza". Este número corresponde a una serie cuya fecha puede corresponder al 26, y seguramente de marzo de 1911. El 29 de marzo las fuerzas maderistas se repliegan a la Hacienda de Bustillo despues de haber sido repelidos por el General Navarro. Ver fotos 2195-4 al 2195 -11 y la titulada "Madero, Hacienda Bustillo" de esta colección. Dr. Roberto Duarte

El 14 de febrero de 1911 Madero cruzó la frontera con 100 voluntarios aproximadamente, de los cuales la mitad eran estadunidenses. Entre los extrangeros que lo acompañaban iba Guisepe Garibaldi, militar en quien más confiaba (F. Katz). ¿Es posible que esta foto hable de eso y haya sido tomada alrededor de esa fecha? Age and loyalty. Poverty strikes disproportionately to the aged but they will not deny the companionship of the non judgmental friend.

While the photo says "beggar" A few other things to note---the even lengths of cord hanging over the man's arm and from the dog's collar. Shoelaces perhaps? It would seems he's trying to make his living however humble the circumstances.

Looks like he's selling belts. And yes, heartbreaking.

Can't tell if the dog is sitting in the remnants of some old rolltop desk by the name of "PHENIX"

You can have a closer look if you go to a higher resolution version that is available at the persistent URL listed in the description. Click on the thumbnail photo and then open the TIFF file.

That made a difference. In the TIFF the dog looks like he is missing an eye, the upright pencils on the front of the desk, and that there is a wooden-handled umbrella leaning on the fence behind them. It may also be shoelaces hanging in front of the dog.

i wish the entire LOC liberary was designed in web 2.0, like getty images or flickr. but altogether - thanks very much for your donations and sharing.

I don't believe the dog is missing an eye, at least I don't see evidence of that.
