The CIT-9 Safety Plane (X-5665), known as the "Flying Dill Pickle" (or "Dill Pickle") due to its shape and green color. Designed by Albert A. Merrill of the California Institute of Technology, hence the "C.I.T." designation. It was displayed at the 1928 National Air Races at Mines Field (now Los Angeles International Airport, LAX/KLAX). The machine gun troop is mentioned in NYT of May 12, 1918. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=990DE1DC103BEE3AB... This picture has 5/16/18 on the negative, which could have been a date of use, or an indication that the photo of the troop was not taken during the May 11 parade.
