  Ray Weishaar was one of the most popular motorcycle racing stars of the 1910s and 1920s. Nicknamed the Kansas Cyclone, he became part of the Harley-Davidson’s “Wrecking Crew” in 1916.
  
  The team’s mascot was a small pig, which they took around the track on victory laps. Because of this mascot, Harley-Davidson motorcycles are called “hogs.”

It's around 900 miles from central Los Angeles to San Francisco, and back, and there were no paved roads en route. East Casitas Pass separates San Fernando Valley from Ventura and the Pacific Ocean.

  The guy with goggles is the despatch rider for the bike. Possibly a Triumph. When the WW1 started, recruted Despach riders had to bring their own bikes!

  According to Wikipedia (so it must be true!), the RN plate is from the Preston area and the NC plate is from Manchester.
