Fire wrecks a forest (LOC)

Thank you for posting these. Why such low resolution?
  • Max Kingsbury said:
This seems like a pretty anthropocentric view on forest fires. I'm sure there are plenty of plants and animals that would disagree if they could articulate themselves.

DNSF: Higher resolution images are available at the Library of Congress website. Follow the link towards the bottom of the description ... hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cph.3b48759. The more complicated part of the story: the Library has been digitizing collections since the early 1990s. As stronger imaging capabilities become available, we adopt them. But with 1.25 million digitized items today, we don't get to go back too often and re-scan pictures. As a result, you'll find a wide variety of image resolutions representing the LOC collections in Flickr. For this WPA poster, the TIFF file on our website is 4.3 MB, which is typical for much of this collection with is 900 posters scanned in the 1990s and 2000. The TIFF for the elephant poster (which was recently re-scanned for a special project) weighs in at 38MB, hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cph.3k00002. It's hard to keep it all straight, so we do document the scanning specification that covers the bulk of a collection. The WPA poster settings are described at www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/wpapos/digitizing.html --Helena (LOC)

Almost looks painted. Very impressive shot.

Looks so much like progressivist poster art of the same period, worker-as-superhero. Just beautiful.

The glow from the furnace and the judicious use of flash work together beautifully...
