[Monte Carlo Casino, gardens, Monaco (Riviera)] (LOC)

This appears to be the reverse view of this photo of the Casino at Monte Carlo. Note the balustrades and the light standards. A modern view from the opposite end of the parkway shows that the landscaping has been altered with the addition of fountains.
  • Michael Daddino said:
I had been wondering if it was Monaco! If you look on the hi-res version of the picture on the LOC site, you can see one of the buildings has a sign that says "HOTEL DE LONDRES," and this tourist guide from 1905 refers to a hotel with that name in Monaco--as well as some other cities including Nice, featured in at least one other mystery shot.

    Garden side, Casino Monte Carlo:
  • The Library of Congress said:
Very interesting to have the pictures matched in a sequence, as if looking back at the casino entrance, before walking onto the veranda, and then into the garden. Thanks for providing the solid visual and hotel name confirmation to restore this picture's identity! (New title added above.)

Another view of Monte Carlo, Monaco, with the two towers of the Casino seen beyond the harbor and part of the old fortifications since converted into the Fort Antoine Theatre in the foreground.
