    trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/223924721 - the Sun, 27th October, 1925...item on the large tree near the Art Gallery which was cut down earlier that day...the 'after' pic that accompanies in this article survives in the NLA's Fairfax Collection...

    I gather the tree might have been cut down to create visual space for Gilbert Bayes' bronze statues 'The Offerings of Peace' and 'The Offerings of War', which were placed outside the entrance to the Art Gallery the following year...in October/?November 1926...the tree would have 'interfered' with 'The Offerings of War', the statue on the Southern side of the Art Gallery entrance...

    trove.nla.gov.au/work/185373855 - a cropped version of this NLA Fairfax aerial pic appeared in the Daily Telegraph on 9th March, 1932...it's not great for comparison because it doesn't show the Art Gallery entrance...but regardless, from what we get to see, it appears that the large tree is now past tense...the closest trees to the Art Gallery on the Southern side are now the two palm trees...

    trove.nla.gov.au/work/189887812 - this NLA Fairfax aerial pic was taken in September 1928 at the time of the International Eucharistic Congress...although the Art Gallery is quite blurred...the pic shows that by this point the large tree has gone...
