    That is a macintosh the girl is wearing - a style that was very widely sold during the mid-1950s. Rather similar material to a riding mac but a bit lighter in weight and with a tartan pattern printed(?) on it. They used to get quite dirty and the rubber lining cracked where it was folded. Generally speaking clothes were still in short supply (rationing continued well after the war) and expensive so they had to be made to last longer than we are used to these days.

    Bus, ja. Melk in een maatje. Ik heb zo'n melkman wel geholpen, toen ik klein was en in arnhem woonde. De kar werd getrokken door een paard, dat zich (achteraf gezien) de pleuris moest werken met al die heuvels.. Van de melkman heb ik de warmhoudslag geleerd, je armen heftig in- en uitslaan.
