Fred Merkle was famous for his "boner." Merkle's Boner was when he neglected to touch second base in the last game of 1908, and thus the Giants lost to the Cubs, had to play a playoff game and the Cubs won and then won the World Series....and THAT was the last time the Cubs won the World Series. Merkle was playing in 1913. He played quite a few years in the majors. I was just talking about his boner in 1908.

Chief Meyers was a very good catcher, one of the best of his time. He lived a long life, I think he was nearly 90 when he died.

Fred Merkle is probably best known for an unfortunate blunder that he made as a rookie in the heat of the 1908 pennant race between the Cubs and the NY Giants. In a 1-1 game in the bottom of the ninth, with Giants runners on first (Merkle) and third, a Giant player lined a single that brought in the supposed winning run. Giants fans stormed the Polo Grounds field, and in the chaos that ensued a Cubs player stood on second base with the ball. After a hasty conference, the umpires ruled that Merkle never touched second base and was ruled out on a force play. The game ended in a tie, rather than a Giants win, and the Cubs went on to win the pennant and the 1908 World Series. The verb "to Merkle," meaning to leave something incomplete, entered the American lexicon.

Going by the uniforms in the photo, I'd have to say that the Giants were in the field and a Red Sox runner was safe at second.

I agree with Murphman61. In the other photos from that year's Series, the Giants have the socks with those stripes. Maybe it's Merkle *making* the tag.

If that's really the World Series, it's probably Philadelphia catcher Ira Thomas. (Their other catcher at the time, Jack Lapp, was a smaller man.) But that's a pretty light crowd for a World Series game, wouldn't you say?
