It was said that Cumman na nGaedheal were a party "who one wished would be open to ideas, until one saw the kind of ideas they were open to". ..no doubt a reference to the colour of some of their shirts. The 1932 general election was held the day after this photograph was taken with Fianna Fail taking 72 seats to Cumman na nGaedheal's 57. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_general_election,_1932

The building was originally the home of Bishop John Power and was later used as a constabulary barracks and also used for a while by the newly formed Civic Guard after 1922. The Manor school, next door on the left, burnt down on the 11th February 1932.

Modern lamps are more attractive. As for the dress, it is unlikely that it was made in a factory. Most of the cloths were made at home, or bought from a dressmaker, who made them in her home. When I was young, and a starving teacher, my wife made everything our girls wore and a lot of what the boys wore. She also made her own clothes and sometimes even something like a shirt for me.

Josephine Campion married Albert Henry Robinson in 1932. You can tell it is her as her father is Jeremiah, a school attendance officer as in the 1911 census.

I was working in the area around that time and I cannot for the life of me remember Flanagans. I exptec that the youngsters were either on their way to Aughrim Street to the church or to Stanhope street convent but I imagine that they were on their way from Stanhope St. As a long time admirer of the mini-skirt I would see nothing profane about them Stefano!

Swordscookie One of our Facebookers knows the Flanagans, and is checking their address at the time (the business is still on the go), but from memory, he thought it was Halston Street. However, Halston Street is so altered, it's impossible to tell - so we'll have to wait to hear from the Flanagans, still Cutler Engineers!

There is another poster just visible on the left of the Waterford Dundalk one, its for Dan Foley who was a labour candidate and the son of this man I think Mr Foley- Ferrybank N.S.
