Part of the patriotic Tableau at the City College Stadium 4th of July show. Julie Bradley Shipman portrayed either "Charity" or "The American Red Cross" depending which source you read. Lucien Muratore (a French Dramatic Tenor and actor) was there to sing "Le Marseillaise", without which no 4th of July celebration is complete.

Mrs. Shipman was known as the wife of Rev. Herbert Shipman, rector of the Church of the Heavenly Rest (THE upper east side 5th Ave. Episcopal church) as well as the only child and heir of millionaire bourbon baron Edson Bradley. She managed to fit this 4th of July appearance into her Summer at Newport, where she and her husband took the Needwood Cottage for the season.

There was more to the Shipmans than Society Teas. Rev. Shipman was also an Army chaplain. He spent 10 years as chaplain at West Point and in 1916 became chaplain to the NY National Guard's First Field Artillery during their deployment to the Mexican Border and as they became the 104th field artillery during WW1. He eventually became chaplain of the District of Paris, of the First Army Corps, and the whole Army Expeditionary Forces.

Mrs Julie Shipman also didn't spend the war sitting a beach chair in Newport. During the winter she trained as a nurse and by January (fastest nursing training I've ever heard of) the papers were running lots of photos of her in a real nurse's uniform announcing that she would soon be going to tend the boys in France.

It might be nice to think that Julie Shipman is one of the nursing students in the Camp Wadsworth nursing school in this batch of Bain photos. Camp Wadsworth is where the Army sent all of the NY National Guard units for training and Rev. Wadsworth spent quite a few months there. But no, she supposedly did her training at NY Presbyterian hospital.
