Who was manning the road block, I wonder? British or Irish soldiers? They are wearing Pattern 1914 leather webbing, that integrated the Pattern 1908 canvas webbing during the Great War. They are also carrying extra cloth cartridge bandoliers for fast reloading. Leather Pattern 1914 webbing was withdrawn by the Britsih Military in 1921, but no doubt it remained in service longer in other militaries that used Britsh equipment. I just saw the date the photo was taken on, so these must be British soldiers, and as all canvas Pattern 1908 webbing was reserved for front line troops, that explains the use of leather Pattern 1914!

Patrick Castelli Sorry, Patrick, didn't get to this quickly enough, but sure you answered your own question without me! :) However, it's an interesting point, and made me return to the description above. I had put in "British soldiers", but have now amended it to "British ARMY soldiers". Those individual men could have been Irish, English, Welsh or Scottish...

National Library of Ireland on The Commons True, I was wondering that myself, they might even have belonged to locally recruited Irish regiments. Even if I suspect that the British War Office made sure all Irish soldiers were stationed and trained away from Ireland...for obvious reasons!

Niall McAuley Are you showing your age Niall? That was the good old CIE green we all grew up to love and admire! The two young lads in the pinstripe suit jackets is an interesting sight! Not likely to be school blazers as they tended to be solid colours but may be the remains of auld dacency in the form of Confirmation suits being worn out before they grew out if you know what I mean. Kids in 1959 could dress quite formally once they got to 14 or thereabouts. Portobello is just down the road from St. Mary's College and the lads may be from there but never with pin stripe blazers???

Is that man sitting on a suitcase, having missed the boat? If you view the largest size, there's some writing on the lifering (is that the proper term), that seems to end in "HAL". So, sould be Youghal. Maybe I'm imagining it.

That is a fabulous image. Looks like grass growing up through the boards, which would suggest that its not used a lot? Wherever it is, I love it.

That's a very distinctive church steeple, but I don't recognize it.

Warren Fleury on Broadsheet.ie says it's "Looking across at Monkstown, Co. Cork from Verlome Dockyard, Carrigaloe." A quick look on Google Street View shows up the distinctive steeple, so I'd say Warren has the right of it.
