SUNBEAM II (LOC)

• Seuss. said:

  Sunbeam II was a 43' 'Scout Cruiser' owned by Robert Barnwell Roosevelt II (1866-1929, a cousin of Teddy.) It was designed and built by the Gas Engine & Power Co. & Chas. L. Seabury Co. It was powered by a 6 cylinder 80hp Speedway engine. This class of boats was designed to be adaptable to Navy use in case of hostilities and several were purchased by wealthy preparedness advocates. Details, including layout and interior Sunbeam II was sold to Ralph Slaven soon after this pic and renamed Bobolink and Roosevelt purchased Sunbeam III which was a 53' Scout Cruiser by the same company. RBR II (Bert) was commissioned a Navy Reserve Lt. during the war and commanded the patrol squadron (including Sunbeam III) operating out of West Sayville. Speedway used this training exercise and Sunbeam II's role in it in its advertising
