This photo ran in The Sunday Oregonian, July 15, 1917, SECTION FIVE, Image 59 with the caption: "SUBMARINES of the United States Navy are painted in stripes of green to to give them "low visibility."' In this guise they are not so easily seen at long range as though they were painted in a solid colot. It is reported that the German submarines are painted irregularly in a variety of colors to make them merge with the water." oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn83045782/1917-07-15/ed-1/se...

This is the USS K-2 (SS-33) in "Zebra-camouflage" (perhaps a more primative form of dazzle-paint or dazzle-camouflage), off "Pensacola, Florida on 12 April, 1916," as per the NavSource Archives. See: www.navsource.org/archives/08/08492.htm See also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_K-2_(SS-33)
