"Joe Edwards" was the alias for the welterweight German boxer Paul Maschke, who was a contender in the 'mixed rules' (boxing/wrestling) events that were taking place in parts of Europe.
On February 1, 1907, Paul Maschke ('Joe Edwards') (Boxing) defeated the Frenchman, Edmond Vary (Jiu Jitsu) in Berlin. There was a rematch on August 11, 1907, between Maschke and Vary (Jiu Jitsu), also in Berlin. One source states that Vary lost again, another, a newspaper article from August 18, 1907, calls it a draw. [1] [2] [3]
On May 17, 1908, in Copenhagen. Paul Maschke ('Joe Edwards') lost in a match with welterweight Johannes Jørgensen, (1867-1913), who used the alias "Jim Smith", [4]
Joe's wife, Rose "Edwards" was also a boxer. Two photographs of her are featured on Flickr.

Johannes Jørgensen ("Jim Smith") defeated German welterweight Paul Maschke, who used the alias "Joe Edwards". [1] There are three LOC photos of "Joe Edwards" on Flickr that can be seen here.
