  Joseph John Lannin, a native of Canada, came up from poverty to own several hotels in the U. S. He acquired the Boston Red Sox in 1914, for $200,000 (a princely sum at the time) and owned the team for only three years. He is remembered for hiring Babe Ruth, but a later team owner let Ruth go. In 1928, Lannin died under peculiar circumstances, falling from a high window of his Brooklyn (N.Y.) hotel.
