The claim of sinking a submarine has since been debunked. At the time, the crew only claimed to have wrecked the periscope and conning tower. The sub in question seems to have been UB40, which survived to the end of the war when it was scuttled in the evacuation of Flanders. The US Navy does not claim a sinking. Jim Rees, What an interesting story! Thanks for sharing the links to sources regarding the actions of the U.S.S. Mongolia. We will update the record with more information.
