Depending on the exact date this ship is either the P&O Moldavia or Mongolia. Chances are it's the latter because in 1928 the Moldavia was refitted, given a second funnel and upper works painted white. The Mongolia had a surprisingly long life, sailing for a time as the New Zealand steamship Company's Rimutaka and ended her days as the Mexican cruise ship Acapulco. The claim of sinking a submarine has since been debunked. At the time, the crew only claimed to have wrecked the periscope and conning tower. The sub in question seems to have been UB40, which survived to the end of the war when it was scuttled in the evacuation of Flanders. The US Navy does not claim a sinking.
