Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Disability History, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

The man is holding an "Exploring Optophone," invented by physicist E. E. Fournier d'Albe (1868-1933) and first exhibited in 1912 at the Optical Convention, South Kensington. It used a selenium detector to control a sound output. D'Albe went on to invent a "Reading Optophone," which attempted to convert text into sound. See Michael Capp and Phil Picton, "The Optophone: An Electronic Blind Aid," Engineering Science and Education Journal (June 2000): 137-143.

Egmont and Hoorn were beheaded in 1568. Their "execution helped spark the national uprising that eventually led to the independence of the Netherlands": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamoral,_Count_of_Egmont
