  The "Phare de France," was an association working in co-operation with an American society, "The Lighthouse." (Phare = lighthouse in French) Its aim was to teach a trade to men blinded in the Great War,. It was under the patronage of President Poincaré, of the American Ambassador, the Hon. W. G. Sharp, and of the French Ministers of War, the Navy, the Interior, and Public Instruction.

Kath. McGirr, Deaf, Dumb & Blind at typewriter (LOC)

  Katherine "Katie" McGirr was eight when she survived exposure during an 1888 blizzard, blind and deaf. Two years later she was admitted to the New York Institute for the Deaf. She's mentioned by name in Helen Keller's "The Story of My Life." Elsewhere on Flickr:
