The man is holding an "Exploring Optophone," invented by physicist E. E. Fournier d'Albe (1868-1933) and first exhibited in 1912 at the Optical Convention, South Kensington. It used a selenium detector to control a sound output. D'Albe went on to invent a "Reading Optophone," which attempted to convert text into sound.
