“Hillsborough Fort Guard was one of only two private armies in the United Kingdom, the other being the Duke of Atholl's Atholl Highlanders.
The War Office attempted to disband the Guard in 1874; law officers, however, advised against it, and the War Office continued to pay £5 per warder per annum (equivalent to £578 in 2020), and a free uniform every two years to twenty of Lord Downshire's estate workers.”

There were big celebrations for the 21st birthday of the Marquis in July 1892, which lasted several days, a banquet in the biggest marquee ever seen in Ireland, special trains to bring interested members of the public, illuminated addresses of congratulation from the tenants of his vast land , and also a spectacular firework display . All reported at great length in the press.
But the only references to his private army was in the Northern Whig: "the armed warders in the uniform of the Dutch Guards could not but remind all present Saturday that the young Marquis holds office as Hereditary Constable of Hillsborough Fort. "
