    The negative doesn't say N.Y. National Guard, and I think that is a captioning error. A June 25, 1916 N.Y. Times article reports on the mobilization of National Guard and civilian aviators for service with the Army, adding that the War Department had leased the Hempstead field near Garden City, Long Island for training aviators. The training camp was part of a federal, not state, effort, and wasn't a project of the N.Y. National Guard. query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F30D14FA3F5D17...

    The tent flap looks like it says "2 S.C. NY," but that's where the tent came from and not necessarily the soldiers. Given the mattressed bedstead and rug on the wooden floor, it wouldn't likely be a weekend maneuver encampment.

    On the other hand, another photo of what seems to be the same event shows a hangar identified as NYNG, Signal Corps, First Battalion, so I don't think the caption is wrong on this one. That photo is dated 5/31/16, and I think that is before the national mobilization. Here's a report from September, 1916: "There are at Mineola, L.I. at present close to one hundred Guardsmen from a dozen States being trained under the direction of the Army under the supervision of Major Carl F Hartmann US Signal Corps and First Lieutenant Joseph E Carberry Military Aviator. Until the first week of August these Guardsmen were trained entirely at private expense. Today the forty Guardsmen (comprising the number which are learning to fly, the others being in charge of other aeronautic work that does not require piloting an aeroplane) form a valuable reserve of prospective military aviators.
