"Bombardier" Billy Wells (1889-1967) was born William Thomas Wells in London, England. He began his professional boxing career in 1910, after serving four years with the Royal Artillery in India (where he was, indeed, a Bombardier.) He held the British Empire heavyweight boxing championship title from 1911 to 1919. He won 41 of his 52 bouts. Wells was also the second of the four athletes who, through the years, struck the enormous gong seen at the beginning of movies made by British producer J. Arthur Rank. BoxRec bout list. Biography at East London History.
