"Bombardier" Billy Wells (1889-1967) was born William Thomas Wells in London, England. He began his professional boxing career in 1910, after serving four years with the Royal Artillery in India (where he was, indeed, a Bombardier.) He held the British Empire heavyweight boxing championship title from 1911 to 1919. He won 41 of his 52 bouts. Wells was also the second of the four athletes who, through the years, struck the enormous gong seen at the beginning of movies made by British producer J. Arthur Rank. BoxRec bout list. Info about Bombardier Billy Wells in comments on this photo. Jim Coffey (1891-1959) was known as "The Roscommon Giant" during his heavyweight career, which lasted from 1911 to 1921. Born in Ireland, he lived in New York City. A February 27, 1913, article in the New York Times (here) on the occasion of Coffey's win over boxer Jim McFarland mentions in passing that Coffey had been training with Bombardier Wells. Wells's match was with Al Palzer, not "Panzer." Also the date written on the sticker in the top left corner is June 27, not June 26.
