Pilot with gunner crew - Europe

Aircraft ( both of them ) are B-26 Marauder bombers, built by the Glenn L. Martin Company at Baltimore, MD. A very tricky aircraft to learn to fly, but tough and effective in combat. The most famous surviving example of the type is "Flak-Bait", which is currently ( April 2015 ) under restoration at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center at Chantilly, VA.

These are actually Douglas A-20 Havoc aircraft (likely A-20B). The identifying features in this photo are the fully glazed nose on the aircraft in the background (only the nose cone was glazed on the Martin B-26 Marauder), and the extended carburetor scoop on the leading edge of the engine cowling (typical of the A-20B) of the aircraft in the foreground. (The Martin B-26 Marauder typically featured TWO scoops on each engine cowling at the 11 O'Clock and 2 O'Clock positions) See: 131st Bomb Wing (USAF) www.131bw.ang.af.mil/shared/media/photodb/photos/2013/06/... A-20J, rather than A-26. Serial 43-21745 "Irene" (coded 8U-S) of the 646th Bomb Squadron.
