Shallow-draught paddle steamers and barges, were the commerce transport of choice in the shallow Darling River. The river ceased to be navigable by the 1950s. Photo of paddle-steamers lined up at Bourke carrying wool c1900, by Kerry. From Powerhouse Museum:

Andy Brill Thanks AndyBrii, thats a great photo! We love the old paddlesteamers. beachcomber australia That is extremely interesting re Bean... He was a journo so that makes sense. Interestingly there are a series of SMH articles reporting on the river trade (& the discussion of a competing railway) in 1908 attibuted to the SHM's "Special Commissioner". Fabulous find!

The articles in the SMH "Wool Land, by Our Special Commisioner" started on Friday 10/9/1909 - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/15106684 , and carried on every Friday until 31/12/1909 in 17 chapters - trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?l-decade=190&l-titl... , should anyone want to read them. All about "real Australians", the wool industry, thinly-veiled patriotism and nationalism, heavily influenced by Rudyard Kipling [not really my cup-of-tea!]. But of great historical interest considering what Charles Bean went on to do with reporting of Gallipoli and WW1 etc.
