According to www.dorsetlife.co.uk/2010/03/the-beginnings-of-bournemouth/ the path was renamed Pine Walk or Pinewalk in 1917 "when the town was trying to attract a more general tourist trade." It had been popular for its health-giving characteristics and convenient sea-bathing.
