"Mr. Smith married Miss Catherine A. Dunn, a boyhood sweetheart, on May 6, 1900. They had five children, Emily (Mrs. John Adams Warner), Catherine (Mrs. Francis J. Quillinan), Alfred E., Jr., Arthur and Walter. Mrs. Smith died on May 4, 1944."

An earlier picture of him in the Bain stream, with his wife and five children, is

Al, Jr. is probably at upper left in the family group. Catherine (not Katherine as in Bain caption) would be sitting at right with the younger boys.

Thanks swanq, we'll fix Catherine's name and update the catalog record.

Could this be en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Smith ? One picture on the Wikipedia page has a similar hat and possibly the same neck and features. If so, he was a democratic politician in state government in New York during this period and became Governor in 1919. www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1495.html has a picture that looks even more like this one. That makes him Alfred Emmanuel Smith

Alfred E. Smith, later the Governor of New York. He looks very young here, compared to his familiar image as the insouciant but unsuccessful Presidential candidate of the Democratic Party in 1928.

swanq and Wystan: Looks like the same guy to me! We'll add his full name to the description next time we update.

At the time of this photo (1913), Al Smith had just begun a term as Speaker of the New York State Assembly. @swanq: there is only one "m" in Emanuel . . . . LOC -- it looks like Smith was photographed on the steps of the New York Capitol, in Albany.
