There are quite a few other Bain photos of this "ship"/recruiting station in Union Square. It didn't open until late May, 1917, so this photo was taken between then and its decommissioning in 1920. query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9802E0D6123BEE... www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=%22ON%20RECRUIT%22&co=... Here's an amusing one, including one of the mascots, a Victrola, and dancing sailors: www.shorpy.com/node/3562 A view of the ship under construction: www.shorpy.com/node/3561

Thanks swanq, TVL1970, and Art Siegel. I've always liked photos of the USS Recruit, and this one with some of the Navy mascots is very cute. We'll add some information to the catalog record and change the date range. I tried to identify the officer in the photo holding the bird, but had no luck. Can anyone else determine who he is?

He is wearing a Chief Petty Officer uniform, but that's about it. Gizmodo ran a story on it last year with some "then and now" shots of Union Square: gizmodo.com/5988945/the-battleship-that-took-over-union-s...
