That looks like a football field (soccer for those of you in the US) What can be seen of the field markings and goal posts look right for football.

According to NYT a Shelton was Right End for Brown and another Shelton was Left End for Cornell See query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9407E3D61638E633A... But his guy is wearing the Cornell uniform, I think. So must be en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_Shelton and www.chautauquasportshalloffame.org/murrayshelton.php The last page has a picture that clinches the identification.
