Wow, mother of Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.!

A photo from this same occasion was featured in the NYT pictorial section of Jan 24, 1915 memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/np_item.pl?collection=sgproto&... or memory.loc.gov/service/sgp/sgpnyt/1915/191501/19150124/00... She was selling programmes at a song recital in aid of destitute war sufferers in Poland (under auspices of Polish American Relief Committee).

"Alma Gluck (May 11, 1884 – October 27, 1938) was a Romanian-born American soprano.

The box in her lap is TinkerbloX -- a thousand thoughts are in the box. See a closeup at digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/03b85b70-2271-0133-6901... and something about the game at www.museumofplay.org/online-collections/3/49/114.5053. The latter dates it as 1917-1920. The MERRY XMAS message is built with TinkerbloX.

The Maillard box probably holds chocolates. See restaurant-ingthroughhistory.com/2008/11/16/famous-in-its...

The toy piano looks like www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-schoenhut-childs-t... The inlay design looks similar, but there are more keys in Gluck's piano. More on Schoenhut pianos from the Museum of Play: www.globaltoynews.com/2013/05/the-strongs-artifact-of-the...

The bear on wheels is lovely, possibly a Steiff, although I'm not sure a new Steiff would have been available in America in 1917. I have not been able to track down a similar wooden frame in pictures of Steiff bears on the web. www.rareandsigned.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=1... has a picture of a replica of the 1921 Steiff bear. A similar Steiff bear dated about 1910 is on offer on eBay for $2,800. See also gaukartifact.com/2013/03/18/a-guide-to-steiff-bears/
