Gas mask drill for artillery horses

  The horses maybe thought these were nosebags.....hopefully searching for oats within the bag..the most heartrending description of horses in war is in ''All quiet on the Western Front'' by Remarque. His description of a british bombardment, both prior, when the horses were moving at night along the line in silvery moonlight { a bad thing in war, as it enables things to be seen} and during the attack, and it's awful aftermath. Maybe the two pages of writing , so powerfully written in the original translation, is what prompted the novel and play ''War Horse''. My son's great Grandad was in the RHA 1914-19 and the horses were as well looked after as they could be in those harrowing conditions.

  Photo caption from AWM: "Wounded Australians of the 15th Brigade, and wounded German prisoners, all unidentified, sheltered beside a British Whippet tank. This tank was one of the new mobile type which had made a successful first appearance in the battle of Hamel. Note the two soldiers standing beside the tank are wearing their gas masks in the alert position in front of their chests. "Taken August 9, 1918, at France: Picardie, Somme, Harbonnieres"
