Every picture tells a story......As a young lad I helped deliver beer and minerals around this town in the fifties. Ger's Coffee Shop was known as Minni Allens's Foodstore then. I was once crossing the street with a wooden crate of empty bottles near where the Garda is standing in this picture. The arse fell out of the crate and much to the amusement of the passers by, nearly three dozen of bottles rolled all the way down the street. Took me ages to pick them all up again lol.

It does and it also gives you a glimpse of the THING, the infamous blot on O'Connell Bridge!!! The pointsmans boxes were introduced to speed up traffic by making the Garda more visible, one of a number of experiments including the one where the Garda wore the "ice-cream sellers" jacket you put up earlier. The problem with the boxes is that drivers did not always see the Garda and being able to walk about and give clear signals in the drivers line of sight was taken away from them. They were taken out again shortly after they were installed. Bachelors Walk looked so much more colourful and interesting in those days, didn't it?

The stripes, obviously meant to make the box stand out, seem to make it, in this photo at least, blend in with the surroundings. The lights might have helped if bright enough to have been seen in the bright sunlight.

Neat capture... they still had this in Switzerland in the 80's as my husband late at night got in one and started directing traffic... crazy Texan.. actually there was almost no cars so for that I was thankful... he did sort of stick out in his Texas cowboy hat, jeans, and boots!!!
